WASHINGTON - A food and beverage industry coalition formed to battle obesity is set to launch here this morning. Called the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, its objective is to reduce obesity, especially in children aged 6 to 11, by 2015.

Retailers, the food and beverage industry and nonprofits launched on Monday the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a partnership aimed at fighting obesity.
Backers said the idea is to help reduce obesity, especially among children, by promoting the idea of balancing calories expended in physical activity with calories consumed in a healthy diet. About $20 million has been committed to the initiative, which will key in on the marketplace, schools and places of employment.

Kellogg Co. Chief Executive Officer David Mackay announced a $20 million anti-obesity campaign to encourage some of the world’s largest food makers to reconsider the way they sell their products.
PepsiCo Inc. of Purchase, N.Y.; General Mills Inc. of Golden Valley; Sara Lee Corp. of Downers Grove, Ill.; and other companies said they would make their products more health conscious.
