Our physical and economic health are linked, and that represents a competitive problem for the American economy. Half of an individual’s health status results from their lifestyle – more than genetics and environment combined. But too many Americans lead lifestyles that undermine our health, increasing employer costs and decreasing productivity. A study released this month by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation shows that large employers are investing in a solution – workplace wellness programs.

National Organization Pursues Wellness as a Priority of African-American Community

1963 was a critical year for African-Americans. Dr. Martin Luther King led the March on Washington. President John F. Kennedy called for a Civil Rights Act. African-American leaders throughout America intensified their organizing efforts aimed at strengthening their community, locally and nationally. One of those initiatives was the 100 Black Men, bringing together community leaders in New York to explore ways of improving conditions in their community (although they chose their name and shaped their national mandate years later).

The result was the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation. The goal of combating obesity is as challenging as it is important. WASHINGTON - A food and beverage industry coalition formed to battle obesity is set to launch here this morning. Called the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, its objective is to reduce obesity, especially in children aged 6 to 11, by 2015.

Retailers, the food and beverage industry and nonprofits launched on Monday the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a partnership aimed at fighting obesity.
 
Backers said the idea is to help reduce obesity, especially among children, by promoting the idea of balancing calories expended in physical activity with calories consumed in a healthy diet. About $20 million has been committed to the initiative, which will key in on the marketplace, schools and places of employment.

Kellogg Co. Chief Executive Officer David Mackay announced a $20 million anti-obesity campaign to encourage some of the world’s largest food makers to reconsider the way they sell their products.

PepsiCo Inc. of Purchase, N.Y.; General Mills Inc. of Golden Valley; Sara Lee Corp. of Downers Grove, Ill.; and other companies said they would make their products more health conscious.
