Making Every Day Count

Every day, millions of people shop at our stores and buy our products. As members of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, we are committed to promoting ways to help people achieve a healthy weight and maintain energy balance—balancing calories consumed as part of a healthy diet with calories expended through physical activity.

Helping People Achieve a Healthy Weight

In the marketplace, our collective focus is on reducing or maintaining calories while preserving or enhancing the overall nutrition of healthier product options, and making every calorie count, as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. We’re helping people understand and pay attention to energy balance, calories and portion size to reduce caloric intake.

Measuring Our Progress

On May 17, 2010, the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation joined First Lady Michelle Obama and the Partnership for a Healthier America in announcing its new pledge to reduce annual calories by 1.5 trillion by the end of 2015, and sustain that level.

Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation manufacturing companies will pursue their calorie reduction goal by developing and introducing lower-calorie options, changing recipes to lower the calorie content of current products, or reducing portion sizes of existing single-serve products.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation serves as the independent evaluator of Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation activities in the marketplace. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will fund an independent group of scientists to define metrics that will be used to track progress and assess the overall impact of the marketplace efforts. The resulting evaluation reports will be released publicly.

Spotlight: Changes in the Marketplace

As part of their effort to make healthier food available to Americans, Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation members continue to take other steps to enhance the products in their portfolios–including adding vital nutrients such as fiber and whole grains, and fruits and vegetables, and increasing the number of great-tasting, convenient and healthier options in the food supply. They will continue to meet the consumers' needs for taste, convenience and value.

Each company participating in the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation is setting strategies based on its own unique portfolio of products and retail stores. All agree to adhere to the same level of accountability and transparency in our marketplace efforts.
